What Type to Choose

There are several different systems that can provide aeration; including blowers, air compressors, fountains and agitators. Generally, aeration occurs when air and water come into contact. Before deciding on which system to select, you should be clear on what you aim to achieve. Is it a problem of low dissolved oxygen, of water mixing or some combination of both?

In most situations of low dissolved oxygen, it is more efficient to put air into the water (with the use of an air compressors and diffuser/air stone), rather than spray water into the air – water is heavy and expensive to move!

Fountains should be used if a display is also desirable. Fountains also have the advantage of circulating mainly the top layer of the pond without bringing up the bottom cold layer. This can be advantageous in trout and other cold water species.

Agitators and blowers are mainly used in fish rearing or bait transport and not in large ponds with normal amounts of fish in them.

The benefits of aeration are many. They include: reducing oxygen stress of fish (summer and winterkill), removing toxic gases from your water, mixing the water (destratification), improving bacterial activity and the decomposition of organic material (reducing eutrophication and some algal problems). There is also a reduction in mosquito larva in the water body.

Frequently Asked Aeration Questions

1. What is the difference between fountain and compressor aeration? Fountains take water from the surface layers of the pond and move them into the air, where they pick up atmospheric oxygen. Fountains help to add oxygen to the top layers of the pond without disturbing the bottom cold layers. Fountains not only add oxygen to your pond but add a visual attraction. Compressor aeration uses air bubbles that are released through air stones below the surface and give up oxygen as the bubbles rise through the water column. Airstones can be used to circulate the whole pond or be floated at mid depth to insure that colder water remains on the bottom. Compressors allow for more air movement per hydro unit as air is easy to move, compared to moving water. There is also a higher oxygen transfer rate with a compressor as oxygen is not only added in the bubble column but as the whole pond is circulated to come into contact with surface air.

2. How will my pond benefit from aeration? Your pond will be greatly improved by adding aeration.  Increasing the oxygen levels in your pond not only helps your fish and other wildlife but can also prevent fish kill over the winter. The increased oxygen can also help to break down nutrients and debris build up at a faster rate. This can be further accelerated by adding beneficial bacteria. When nutrients and debris is broken down at a faster rate it can help to prevent algae and weed growth. Plants simply do not grow as well without nutrients. Aeration will also help to circulate your pond and prevent stagnation and reduce the number of mosquitoes that can breed in your pond.

3. Does the aeration system have to run continuously? During the winter months your compressor units should be run continuously to prevent any ice blockages from forming in your air line. You will also have much healthier pond in the spring as cold water holds much more oxygen. Fountain type aerators should be removed and stored for the winter to prevent possible damage to the unit. During the summer months both compressor and fountain aerators do not have to run continuously although it is often beneficial to do so. The most important time to run an aerator during the summer is in the pre-dawn hours, as this is when oxygen levels in your pond will dip to their lowest levels. Running compressor-type aerators at night can have the added benefit that the air you are adding to your water is cooler and so will not warm up your pond as quickly.

4. Should a compressor or fountain aerator be used in a lake where trout are raised? Trout generally require water colder then 20oC (68oF). During the winter when water temperature is not a problem, aeration should be done using a compressor with the diffusers on the bottom of the pond. During the summer when surface temperatures will likely reach temperatures above 20oC (68oF) aeration can either be done with a compressor or fountain aerator. The fountain will not draw the cold water at the bottom of the pond to the top and therefore avoids warming up the pond significantly. Fountains should not be run during the warmest days of the summer during the midday due to evaporation concerns. Compressor aeration can be used with trout with the diffusers suspended at only half of the total pond depth to prevent bottom cold water from being draw to the surface, maintaining cold water at the lowest depths. Compressors should not be run during the hottest part of the day during the summer and can often be put on a timer to run all night and shut off shortly after dawn.

5. Will the diffusers stir up mud on the bottom of my pond? There is often a little sediment that is stirred up with the initial start up as the loose sediment is cleared out around the diffuser. In the long term, they will not stir up sediment as our 7” round diffusers have been designed to sit directly on the bottom of the pond. The bottom PVC disk insures that air is all directed upward to prevent it from moving mud or digging into the bottom of the pond.

6. How many diffusers should be used? This will depend on the size, depth, and shape of your pond as well as your goal for aeration. 7. How far apart should the diffuser be placed? As a general rule, the diffusers should be equal distance from each other and the shore. However, the deeper that your airstone is the more water that it will be aerated and moved.
